Madonna and child
Giovanni da Milano | 1320
Currently on display: Palazzo Farnese Civic Museums, Art Gallery
The Child holds a small bird in his hand, a symbol of the sacrifice to come. Both figures are dressed in sumptuous, richly decorated robes. The painting has been attributed, albeit with considerable reservations, to Giovanni da Milano, whose style blends influences from Giotto’s tradition with elements that are already Gothic.
