Piacenza's Liver Flies to San Francisco

Published on 23 April 2026 • news

The famous Liver of Piacenza , a unique Etruscan artefact in the world and a symbol of the city's identity, will be one of the protagonists of the international exhibition “The Etruscans: From the Heart of Ancient Italy” , scheduled from May 2 to September 20, 2026 at the Legion of Honor Museum , part of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco .

The loan represents an event of extraordinary importance : the Liver of Piacenza, preserved in Palazzo Farnese and discovered in the Gossolengo area, had never left the city since 1877. Its presence in the United States therefore marks a historic moment, part of a high-profile exhibition project that brings together approximately 150 works from thirty international museums, establishing itself as one of the most important exhibitions dedicated to Etruscan civilization ever held outside of Italy.

Bringing the Liver of Piacenza to San Francisco means highlighting one of the most important testimonies to the city's history and Etruscan civilization at the international level , promoting Piacenza on global stages through a strategic operation that contributes to strengthening its international positioning. A fundamental artifact for understanding Etruscan religion and divinatory practices, the Liver is considered a key element in the overall interpretation of Etruscan civilization. Its inclusion in the exhibition contributes decisively to the scientific narrative of the exhibition, curated by Renée Dreyfus , an internationally renowned figure.

The initiative takes on a value that goes beyond the cultural and scientific level, configuring itself as a major international promotional and positioning operation for Piacenza . Bringing one of the world's most significant finds for understanding Etruscan civilization overseas means strengthening the visibility of the city and its heritage on a global scale .

The announcement was made by Mayor Katia Tarasconi in her closing remarks at the presentation of Piacenza Nexus , the Municipality's Territorial Marketing Plan. On that occasion, the mayor also explained that the municipal administration is working to soon secure a €2 million low-interest loan, aimed at making Palazzo Farnese an increasingly international museum . This is a strategy the administration is pursuing with determination, in the belief that enhancing the artistic, cultural, and archaeological heritage represents a fundamental lever for the development and attractiveness of the area. This process, already underway with internationally significant experiences, such as the exhibition of the Portrait of a Lady in Seoul , has now reached a new, significant stage.
