Jacopo del Casentino | first half of the 14th century
Currently on display: Palazzo Farnese Civic Museums, Art Gallery
The portable altarpiece, used for domestic devotion, depicts the Virgin Mary seated on a Gothic throne, with the Child on her lap, presenting a crosier to a holy bishop. The other figures are Saint John the Baptist (on the left), Saint Peter (on the right), two unidentified bishops, and two female figures. The side panels feature two saints (Saint Catherine of Alexandria and presumably Saint Dorothy) and the Crucifixion, while the side spandrels depict the Annunciation. The painting draws on Giotto’s style, particularly evident in the figure of Christ.
